Mountaineers extend win streak to five

ANCASTER, Ont. – The Mohawk Mountaineers women's volleyball team remains perfect five matches into the 2024-25 season following a 3-1 (16-25, 25-16, 27-25, 25-22) win over the Redeemer Royals.

It was a slow start for the Mountaineers coming into the Royals gymnasium. Mohawk fell behind by 10 points, ultimately making it a difficult situation for a comeback. The Mountaineers got the set within five-points, but the Royals held on to go up 1-0 in the match.

It was about halfway through the second set when Mohawk finally settled in. Tied at 14-14, the Mountaineers scored six straight to build their best lead of the match. Redeemer stopped the run to make it a 20-16 score favouring Mohawk, who quickly scored five consecutive to even the match at 1-1.

In set three the Mountaineers trailed again, down 10-6 early, but they'd get within one to make it 11-10 for the Royals. Mohawk would score five of the next six to take a 15-12 advantage. Redeemer would get back into the set as the two teams began to trade leads. The Mountaineers had set point at 24-21, however, the Royals stormed back to even it at 24-24. Mohawk again had set point at 25-24, but Redeemer tied it again, until the Mountaineers scored the next two points to take a 2-1 match lead.

It was close again in set four as it was more back and forth play. Leading 15-14, Mohawk scored four in a row to hold a five-point lead. The Royals got within three a couple of times, but the Mountaineers would hold on to end the match.

Thea Spasic (Hamilton, Ont.) and Olivia Rosewell (Hamilton, Ont.) led the Mohawk offense with 11 kills each. Although, Julia Marks (Lucan, Ont.) was held in check offensively, the first-year had 23 digs. Alora Lavalee (Milton, Ont.) had a good game with 29 assists and Sofia Spoljar (Hamilton, Ont.) was solid defensively as well with 18 digs.

The Mountaineers will face the Conestoga Condors in their next match. It will be the second time in under two weeks the two teams will meet with Mohawk winning the first matchup. Action is scheduled for Nov. 6 in Kitchener, Ont. at 6 p.m.
