Mountaineers extend win streak versus Condors

Box Score KITCHENER, Ont. – In the span of 11 days the Mohawk Mountaineers women's volleyball team has defeated the Conestoga Condors for the second time. The Mountaineers swept the Condors 3-0 (25-23, 25-20, 25-19).
 
In the opening set Mohawk fell behind by five, 12-7, forcing head coach Jenny Pellegrino to call a timeout. The Mountaineers were able to regroup to bring set one even at 13-13. Mohawk finally took a set lead at 23-22, but Conestoga got the next point to tie it up again. The Mountaineers scored the next point to get set point, which was followed by a Naomi Moreton (Hamilton, Ont.) service ace for the set win.
 
Set two showcased an even contest between the two teams as they played to a 17-17 tie. Mohawk scored the next three, which led to a Conestoga timeout. The Condors got the set back within two, but the Mountaineers closed the door to go up 2-0 in the match.
 
Conestoga built momentum in set three, holding a 10-6 advantage. The Condors held onto the four-point lead for a few plays, but the set became even at 14-14. At 15-15 is when the momentum fully turned towards the Mountaineers, who took a 21-17 lead. Conestoga then got within three at 22-19, but Mohawk scored the next three to win the match in a clean sweep.
 
The Mountaineers had some great stat lines from a couple of their athletes. Thea Spasic (Hamilton, Ont.) finished the match with nine kills, nine digs and three service aces, while Julia Marks (Lucan, Ont.) impressed at the service line with five aces.
 
Mohawk brings their record to start the 2024-25 campaign to 6-0 with the Sheridan Bruins next up. The Mountaineers and Bruins will meet for the second time this season on Nov. 9 at 6 p.m. Action will take place inside the David Braley Athletic and Recreation Centre.
