Mohawk loses on the road to Niagara

WELLAND, Ont. – Mohawk Mountaineers men's soccer lost 4-2 on the road to the Niagara Knights, extending their losing streak to seven.

The shot advantage in the first 45 minutes favoured Niagara 12-6, resulting in a halftime score of 1-0.

Mohawk would find themselves trailing 2-0 in the 69th minute of the match, but five minutes later Boa Phan (Hamilton, Ont.) scored his second of the season to cut the lead in half.

The Knights continued to put pressure on the Mountaineer backline in the second half scoring a third and fourth goal two minutes apart, in the 84th and 86th minutes.

Christopher Tavares (Milton, Ont.) scored his first career OCAA goal in the 88th minute to again cut the Niagara lead to 4-2, but at that point it was too late for any Mohawk comeback.

Benjamin Temple (London, Ont) was in net for the Mountaineers for 65 minutes of the matching, and successfully stopped eight Knights shot attempts. Marco Ferrusi (Hamilton, Ont.) would substitute in for the final 25 minutes, making three stops.

While Mohawk has clinched an OCAA playoff spot, they will closeout regular season play on Oct. 12 in Ancaster, Ont. versus the Redeemer Royals. The match will begin at 2 p.m.
