Mountaineers pull out win in overtime thriller with Knights

WELLAND, Ont. - The Mohawk Mountaineers men's basketball team snapped their losing streak with a 95-90 overtime win against the Niagara Knights.

In the first quarter Mohawk went back and forth with the Knights trading shots at either of end of the floor. In the final seconds of the quarter Charlie Hennessy (Windsor, Ont.) would get the last word, hitting a mid-range jumper to put the Mountaineers up 20-19.

In the second quarter the Mountaineers would find a little bit of breathing room as they would go on a six-point run to start the quarter, their biggest of the night. That breathing room would be short lived as back-to-back threes late in the quarter by the Knights would keep the game tight at 41-40 favouring Mohawk heading into the half.

Coming out of halftime Mohawk was on fire, outscoring the Knights nine to three in the opening four minutes of the quarter. Niagara would respond with an impressive run of their own, as they would score ten unanswered points to take the led.

The three point shots would help the Mountaineers keep it close as they shot five-of-10 in the quarter including back-to-back threes from Caldre Campbell (Hamilton, Ont.) to maintain their 64-61 lead heading into the fourth.

To start the fourth quarter, the Knights would come out hot, hitting three straight threes in the first two minutes. Ultimately, after continuing to go toe to toe the entire game, Harpreet Gill (Brampton, Ont.) would grab his own rebound and make a critical layup to give the Mountaineers an 83-82 lead with seven seconds remaining.

A foul called against Gill and a missed last chance three from Mohawk would send the game into overtime.

To begin the extra frame, back-to-back threes from Campbell gave the Mountaineers a cushion that would slowly dwindle away as they got into foul trouble.

Campbell and Gill, two of Mohawks top performers, would foul out in overtime allowing the Knights to tie the game with 1:30 left.

Niagara would also get into foul trouble late, setting up a critical steal from Jailen Jackson (Hamilton, Ont.) to clinch the win for Mountaineers.

Hennessy and Campbell led the offense for Mohawk scoring 17 points each, while Raivone Young (Halifax, NS) scored 13 points of his own.

The Mountaineers will look to stay on the winning path on Nov. 16 as they host the Canadore Panthers in Hamilton, Ont. Game time is scheduled for 6 p.m.
