Mountaineers win exciting five set match over Saints

HAMILTON, Ont. – The Mohawk Mountaineers men's volleyball team won an exciting five set match over the St. Clair Saints, 3-2 (20-25, 25-22, 25-14, 21-25, 15-10).

Mohawk fell behind in the first set with St. Clair leading 13-9. The Mountaineers got back within three, but that would be all the Saints would allow for the set win.

Set two was close throughout until Mohawk built some momentum for an 18-15 advantage. The Mountaineers then got their lead as high as four, but the Saints responded to make it a 23-22 Mohawk lead. From there the Mountaineers recovered to win the next two points and even the match 1-1.

In the third set the Mountaineers really found momentum as they took a 17-10 lead. With St. Clair reeling, Mohawk kept up the strong play to take a 2-1 match lead.

The match would extend to a fifth set after the Saints found some late fourth set rhythm to even it up 2-2.

In set five, with a loud home crowd behind them, the Mountaineers took an 8-5 advantage before the two teams switched sides. After a brief break, Mohawk only led by two at 10-8. After a timeout called by the Mountaineers, they scored the next two points to hold a four-point lead at 13-9 and Mohawk proceeded to score two of the next three points for the match victory.

Alex Jurak (St. Catharines, Ont.) stood out with 14 kills and Brecken Morrison () had 10 kills. Cole Crowder (Milton, Ont.) got the start at setter and finished the five set match with 36 assists.

The Mountaineers will look to closeout the first half of the season strong when they travel to Sudbury, Ont. to play the Cambrian Shield on Nov. 29 at 8 p.m. followed by the Boreal Vipers on Nov. 30 at 3 p.m.
