Mountaineers fall short of comeback versus Saints

WINDSOR, Ont. – A deficit of 23 points was too large to overcome for the Mohawk Mountaineers women's basketball team as they fell to the St. Clair Saints 76-72.

The Mountaineers concluded the first quarter with a 20-19 lead, but their offense began to slump in the second. Mohawk was held to 11 points for the quarter as their lead vanished and St. Clair went into halftime up 40-31.

The Saints could not miss from the field in the third quarter, shooting 81.8 per cent and knocking down five threes. It wasn't much better on the offensive side for the Mountaineers as they found themselves down 20 heading into the final quarter.

Mohawk began to click in the final frame, shooting 64.7 per cent from the field and holding St. Clair to 15.4 per cent. The Mountaineers got the lead down to four with 13 seconds left, but their wasn't enough time remaining for a complete comeback.

Maddie Anderson (Whitby, Ont.) led the Mountaineers with 18 points and six rebounds. Kendra Oliver (Ajax, Ont.) came off the bench to provide a double-double with 16 points and 13 rebounds.

There won't be much time to dwell on the loss for Mohawk as they'll immediately travel to Sarnia, Ont. to play the Lambton Lions on Nov. 23 at 1 p.m.
