Mountaineers fall in four sets to No. 11 Saints

HAMILTON, Ont. – The Mohawk Mountaineers women's volleyball team fell to the No. 11 nationally ranked St. Clair Saints 3-1 (25-22, 25-12, 20-25, 25-22).
 
It was an equally contested first set with the Mountaineers trailing by no more than four points at one point. Down 18-14 late, Mohawk pushed back to even the set a 19-19. St. Clair would push together the next four points to regain control. While the match got close again at 24-22, the Saints closed the door for any Mountaineer comeback.
 
St. Clair had all control of the second set as they jumped out to a 12-4 advantage and continued to grow their lead to go up 2-0 in the match.
 
The Mountaineers came out strong in the third set as they found their rhythm again. Mohawk held a 12-5 lead early and held that seven point lead late at 22-15. St. Clair got within three, but the Mountaineers extended the match to a fourth set.
 
Set four saw both teams trading momentum again, but Mohawk looked to be the better team early when they took a 13-8 lead. The Saints immediately began to push back, tying the set at 15-15 before taking the lead. The Mountaineers responded as they trailed the Saints 23-22, but quickly St. Clair closed the match on two consecutive points.
 
Olivia Rosewell (Hamilton, Ont.) was the offensive leader for Mohawk with 12 kills. Sofia Spoljar (Hamilton, Ont.) stood strong defensively with 16 digs.
 
The Mountaineers will conclude the first half of their season with a road trip to Sudbury, Ont., which begins on Nov. 29 when they play the Cambrian Shield at 6 p.m. followed by a matchup versus the Boreal Vipers on Nov. 30 at 1 p.m.
