Mountaineers begin road trip with loss to Shield

Box Score SUDBURY, Ont. – The Mohawk Mountaineers women's volleyball team began their two-day road trip with a 3-1 (16-25, 25-17, 24-26, 23-25) loss to the Cambrian Shield.

It is the Mountaineers first loss this season to a team not nationally ranked as their conference record falls to 7-3 and their losing streak extends to three.

Mohawk came out cold in the first set, falling behind Cambrian 9-3. The Mountaineers became to roll by bringing the set back within two, but the Shield eventually grew their lead back up to eight before closing out for a 1-0 match lead.

The Mountaineers struggled again early in the second set, falling behind 8-2. Out of a timeout, Mohawk found their footing to take a 14-11 lead. From that point forward the Mountaineers held onto the lead and tied the match 1-1.

Set three and four were close contests, but Mohawk ended up on the wrong side of the scoreboard. In set three the two teams were tied 23-23, but Cambrian would earn set point twice and eventually win to take 2-1 match lead.

Then in set four, the Mountaineers fell behind big but rallied again to bring the score close. Mohawk tied the set at 23-23, however they'd lose the next two points to conclude the match.
