Playoff Preview: Mountaineers face No. 3 Sting in playoff opener

HAMILTON, Ont. – The Mohawk Mountaineers women's volleyball team will open the OCAA playoffs on the road against the No. 3 nationally ranked and OCAA East Division champion Seneca Sting in a qualifying-round matchup.

Mohawk enters the postseason with a 6-10 regular-season record and the eighth seed from the OCAA West Division. Seneca finished a perfect 16-0 and dropped only three sets all season.

SEASON RECAP
Four of Mohawk's six wins came in the second half of the season, including a 3-2 victory over the Fanshawe Falcons in the regular-season finale.

Despite an up-and-down campaign, the Mountaineers received strong individual performances. Avery McConkey (Stratford, Ont.) finished second in the OCAA in total kills with 184, trailing only Seneca's Mikyla Patras. Libero Sofia Spoljar (Hamilton, Ont.) ranked second in the league in digs with 205.

Mohawk has been eliminated in the opening round of the playoffs in each of the past two seasons.

Seneca is coming off its second consecutive undefeated regular season and has compiled a 54-3 overall record since 2023-24, including playoff matches. Two of the Sting's three losses during that span came in the postseason – an opening-round defeat to Conestoga in 2024-25 and an OCAA championship loss to the Humber Hawks in 2023-24.

All of Seneca's matches this season ended in straight sets, except for its five-set season opener against Canadore and a four-set win over Georgian in late January.
