Mountaineers cruise past Lions to split road trip

Sarnia, Ont. - Mohawk Mountaineers men's basketball pull off a dominant performance with a 78-65 win over the Lambton Lions.

The Mountaineers found their stride early in the opening quarter as they would go on a 11-point run to hold a comfortable 24-14 lead.

Mohawk's scoring would be less efficient in the second quarter, but two separate six-point runs would extend their lead over Lambton 41-27 at halftime.

The offensive struggles continued in the third quarter despite the lead as the Mountaineers shot 27.8 per cent from the field versus the Lions 50 per cent. Lambton, however, would throw Mohawk a lifeline in the quarter with foul trouble. That allowed the Mountaineers to score eight of th eteams 17 points from the free throw line, maintaining a 62-48 lead.

In the final frame, Mohawk built on their separation from the Lions as they went on a 12-3 run in the early portion of the fourth to secure the victory on the road.

Raivone Young (Halifax, N.S.) led the Mountaineers with 17 points, while Marko Dosen (Hamilton, Ont.) contributed 16 points and Jailen Jackson (Hamilton, Ont.) provided 12.

Mohawk will look to end the year on a winning note as they host the Conestoga Condors on Nov. 30 at 3 p.m. to closeout the first half of the 2024-25 season.
