Mountaineers overpower Condors in 20-point victory

HAMILTON, Ont. – The Mohawk Mountaineers women's basketball team took care of business in their final game of the first half, defeating the Conestoga Condors 66-46.
 
Angong Jacob (Calgary, AB.) carried the Mountaineers offense early, scoring 10 of her game-high 19 in the first quarter. Mohawk started the quarter on a 10-3 run and held an eight point lead by the end of the first 10 minutes.
 
The Mountaineers defence continued to stand tall in the second quarter, holding the Condors to 23.1 per cent from the field. Conestoga would be held to 24 per cent for the entirety of the first half.
 
Offensively, Mohawk was sparked by a 9-0 run in the second to take a 33-18 lead into halftime.
 
The Condors found their rhythm coming out of the break as all three of their three-pointers for the game came in the third quarter. Conestoga went on a 14-4 run to start the third, cutting the Mohawk lead down to five. By the end of the third, the Mountaineers only led by two, 41-39.
 
Mohawk's offensive presence returned in the final quarter with a 16-2 run. As a team the Mountaineers shot 62.2 per cent from the field in the final frame leading to their biggest lead of the game of 20-points.
 
Maddie Anderson (Whitby, Ont.), Kendra Oliver (Ajax, Ont.) and Tiffany Williams (Hamilton, Ont.) all contributed offensively with 10 points each. Both Oliver and Williams finished a rebound shy of a double-double with nine each, respectively.
 
Mohawk will have a month off for the holiday break and then return to action for two exhibition games during the first weekend of the new year. Regular season play will get going again for the Mountaineers on Jan. 8 when they matchup versus the Condors in Kitchener, Ont. at 6 p.m.
