Mountaineers squeeze by Falcons to conclude regular season

Maddie Anderson's career-high 25 leads to Mohawk win

HAMILTON – Mohawk Mountaineers women's basketball, who once led by 22 points in the contest, held on for a 89-83 victory over the Fanshawe Falcons.

The Mountaineers finish the 2023-24 season with a 12-4 record and are locked in as the OCAA west division four seed. It is Mohawk's best regular season record since the 2017-18 season.

Maddie Anderson (Whitby, ON), after picking up her first career double-double in the Mountaineers last game, followed up the performance with a career-high 25 points on nine-of-14 shooting and five made threes.

Mohawk shot 66.7 per cent in the opening quarter to take a 10-point lead. Down 13-8 with 5:25 left in the opening quarter, the Mountaineers went on a 15-0 to pull away from the Falcons.

The biggest lead of the game for Mohawk of 22 points came with 7:02 left in the first half. The Mountaineers held a 17-point advantage at halftime.

The turnovers began to pile up for the Mountaineers in the second half with a total of 18 which allowed Fanshawe to chip away at the lead. Once Mohawk got their lead back up to 20 in the early parts of the third quarter, the Falcons answered with a 15-0 run of their own to bring the Mountaineers lead down to five.

In the fourth quarter Mohawk got their lead back to 15, but Fanshawe continued to hover around getting within three points multiple times before the Mountaineers hung on for the win.

Tatjana Boskovic (Hamilton, ON) scored 15 of her 16 points in the first quarter while adding a double-double with 12 rebounds. Skyla Minaker (Sarnia, ON) had a near triple-double with 14 points, seven assists and seven steals, meanwhile Tiffany Williams (Hamilton, ON) came off the bench with 14 points and eight rebounds.

With the win the Mountaineers will host an OCAA crossover round playoff game next weekend in the DBARC. Date, time and opponent is still to be announced.
