Mountaineers end season with second straight loss

Mohawk now prepares for playoffs after 11-7 regular season

HAMTILON – Mohawk Mountaineers men's basketball concluded the 2023-24 regular season with a 102-98 loss to the Fanshawe Falcons.
 
It was the Mountaineers second straight loss, bringing their record for the year to 11-7. They finish the season as the three seed in the OCAA West and have earned themselves a playoff home game.
 
In the contest Mohawk and Fanshawe remained even after the first quarter, tied 26-26. The Falcons would then take a five-point led into halftime, but by the end of the third quarter the two were even again at 75-75.
 
The fourth quarter started with both teams trading baskets, but with 6:34 remaining Fanshawe took a four-point lead. Mohawk would battle back for the lead with 3:54 left but both teams would once again start to trade baskets.
 
The Mountaineers held a 98-96 lead with 3:06 remaining but would go scoreless the remainder of the game. Trailing 100-98 with just over two minutes to go, Mohawk had ample opportunities to tie the game but went zero-for-six from the field.
 
All five Mountaineer starters finished in double digit scoring with Iverson Chong (Oakville, ON) scoring 24. Harpreet Gill (Brampton, ON) and Raivone Young (Halifax, NS) provided 21 each, Cale Calura (Hamilton, ON) scored 12 and Jailen Jackson (Hamilton, ON) had 10.
