Mountaineers complete comeback; advance to the OCAA quarterfinals

Eleven-point fourth quarter swing gives Mohawk the win

HAMILTON – Down by nine points to begin the fourth quarter, Mohawk Mountaineers men's basketball showed resilience in a 98-96 comeback victory over the Loyalist Lancers.

With the win the Mountaineers advance to the OCAA quarterfinals next weekend.

The game started in favour of Mohawk as they jumped out to a 14-4 lead in the opening four minutes of the game. But Loyalist would settle in to cut the Mountaineers lead down five as Mohawk held a 22-17 advantage after the first quarter.

An inability to rebound in the first half would catch-up to the Mountaineers in the second quarter as the Lancers took the lead with 5:15 left in the opening half. Loyalist went into the locker room leading 41-37.

Mohawk lost the first half rebounding battle 25-10 and gave up 11 offensive rebounds.

While the Mountaineers began to boxout in the third quarter the Lancers began to score at will, shooting 52.9 per cent from the floor. Loyalist would also shoot 11-for-15 from the free throw line in the quarter, which allowed them to extend their lead to nine heading into the final quarter.

Mohawk would find some rhythm in the early minutes of the fourth as a 10-0 run would tie the game at 75-75. The Mountaineers run was capped by back-to-back threes from Raivone Young (Halifax, NS) and Iverson Chong (Oakville, ON).

At 5:37 left in the game Mohawk would take the lead and then go up 90-77 on the back of a 15-0 run.

Leading by 13 with 3:14 left, the game was not in full control of the Mountaineers as the Lancers had one more push remaining. Down 96-87 with 26 seconds remaining, Loyalist would knock down a three and make two free throws to cut Mohawk's lead to three.

Harpreet Gill (Brampton, ON) would extend the Mountaineers lead to five as the clock would run out on the Lancers, who made a buzzer-beater three to give Mohawk the two-point win.

Young scored 21 of his team-high 29 points in the second half of the contest, meanwhile Gill scored 19 of his 25 in the second half and had 10 rebounds for a double-double. Chong provided the Mountaineers with 19 points and Cale Calura (Hamilton, ON) also finished in double digits with 15.

The game featured a combined 56 fouls with Mohawk shooting 25-of-40 from the charity stripe and Loyalist was 27-of-38.

With the victory the Mountaineers will head to Toronto next weekend to face the George Brown Huskies in the OCAA quarterfinal round. Date and time of the game is still to be determined.
