Box Score ETOBICOKE – Mohawk Mountaineers women's basketball defeated the Humber Hawks 70-63 and along the way secured the fourth seed in the OCAA West division. The victory guarantees the Mountaineers a home playoff game.

Mohawk's win also means they have swept the season series versus Humber for the first time since the 1989-90 season.

Maddie Anderson (Whitby, ON) led the way for Mohawk with her first career double-double, scoring 17 points on four made threes and securing 13 rebounds. Angong Jacob (Calgary, AB) was the leading scorer in the game with 20. Tatjana Boskovic (Hamilton, ON) and Peyton Connolly (Hamilton, ON) provided 11 and 10, respectively.

As a team the Mountaineers started the game on a 14-2 run, but the Hawks slowly chipped away throughout the opening quarter. Mohawk would lead 24-18 after the first.

It would be a cold shooting second quarter for the Mountaineers, who made four field goals and shot zero-of-seven from three. It allowed Humber to take the lead at halftime, 37-34.

Mohawk would step it up in the third quarter on both sides of the floor. Despite shooting one-of-eight from three, the Mountaineers shot 45 per cent from the field. It was Anderson's best quarter, as she put up eight points and grabbed six rebounds.

On the other end the Hawks shot 13.3 per cent from the field in the third and were outscored by 11, as Mohawk regained the lead.

Humber's cold shooting continued into the fourth as Mohawk gave them ample opportunities to cut into the lead. The Hawks shot 30 per cent in the final 10 minutes and two-of-10 from three.

By the 3:04 mark Humber had the Mohawk lead down to six and eventually down to four with 1:03 remaining. But Anderson knocked down a clutch three to put the Mountaineers back up by seven.

For the game Mohawk shot 41.4 per cent from the field and Humber was a cold 27.1 per cent. While giving the Hawks 21 points off turnovers the Mountaineers survived on 32 points in the paint.

While Mohawk has secured home court for the opening round of the OCAA playoffs, they will closeout regular season play on Feb. 10 when they host the Fanshawe Falcons at 6 p.m.
