Two second half goals lift Mountaineers to win

SARNIA, Ont. – The Mohawk Mountaineers men's soccer team secured its first season opener win since 2017, defeating the Lambton Lions 2-1.
 
Mohawk's 2017 win to start the season also came versus the Lions.
 
In the match on Saturday, the Mountaineers found themselves playing from behind when the Lions scored in the 26th minute.

Held scoreless in the first half, Mohawk evened the scoring in the 57th minute when Hamza Salman (Hamilton, Ont.) found the back of the net.
 
First-year midfielder Ignacio Torres (Burlington, Ont.) would score the game-winner for the Mountaineers in the 67th minute. It was Torres' first career goal.
 
Nicholas Filipovic (Hamilton, Ont.) started for Mohawk, and while he allowed one goal, he made three stops to help secure the win.
 
Next up for the Mountaineers will be a match versus the St. Clair Saints in Windsor, Ont. on Sept. 8. Kick-off is scheduled for 3 p.m.
