Mountaineers begin second half with loss to Falcons

HAMILTON, Ont. – A late rally by Mohawk Mountaineers women's volleyball could not overcome an early deficit as the team fell 3-1 to the Fanshawe Falcons.
 
It was a sloppy start to the match for the Mountaineers as they kicked off the second half of the season. Fanshawe early in the set led 3-2 and would hold on to the lead for the remainder of the opening set. The Falcons lead would grow as high as eight in the set as they closed the door, winning 25-19.
 
In set two the Mountaineers hung around, but continued to play from behind. Fanshawe would take a 2-0 match lead with a 25-18 set two victory.
 
Momentum shifted to the other side of the net in set three with Mohawk finally piecing together consecutive points. Mohawk began the set with a 5-1 lead and while Fanshawe showed fight, Mohawk kept a handle on their lead to take the set 25-18.
 
It was late in set four when the Falcons took control again and were in match point position at 24-16. The Mountaineers extended the match with seven straight points on the back of Maggie Galand's (Burlington, Ont.) serving, but a tough ball off the tape ended Mohawk's comeback hopes.  
 
Thea Spasic (Hamilton, Ont.) and Olivia Rosewell (Hamilton, Ont.) were offensive leaders for the Mountaineers with 11 kills each. Megan Battersby (Welland, Ont.) spread the offense around with 30 assists and Emma Becke (Burlington, Ont.) defensively provided 16 digs.
 
Mohawk will look to bounce back this weekend when they play the Niagara Knights in Welland, Ont. The match will take place on January 11 at 1 p.m.
