Mountaineers lose in four sets to Knights

WELLAND, Ont. – The Mohawk Mountaineers women's volleyball team found themselves on the losing end for the second consecutive match, falling to the Niagara Knights 3-1.
 
In early in the opening set both teams could not establish momentum as the lead changed hands multiple times. Mohawk found themselves in a 15-12 deficit before making their way, but Niagara would quickly regain the three-point lead and win the set 25-21.
 
The Mountaineers struggled in the second set after the two teams were tied at 6-6. It would be the Knights that scored eight of the next nine points to lead 14-7. Mohawk would only see the deficit grow, falling behind in the match 2-0 after a 25-13 second set loss.
 
Set three would be a much more event contest with the Mountaineers finally finding some rhythm. Mohawk's lead in the set would be as high as four and while Niagara showed fight, the Mountaineers held on for a 25-22 set win and bringing the match to 2-1 favouring the Knights.  
 
Mohawk then got off to a slow start in set four, trailing 10-6. The Mountaineers were behind 23-18 late before evening the set with five straight points. Niagara held match point at 24-23, but Mohawk would tie it up again before the Knights included the match with a 26-24 set four win.
 
Sofia Spoljar (Hamilton, Ont.) and Olivia Rosewell (Hamilton, Ont.) concluded the match with 10 kills each. Spoljar also added a team-high 17 digs.
 
The Mountaineers will look to snap their two-game losing streak at home on January 18 when they host the Redeemer Royals at 1 p.m.
