Mountaineers swept at home by Royals

Box Score HAMILTON, Ont. – Mohawk Mountaineers women's volleyball fell to the Redeemer Royals 3-0 in a home contest.

The Mountaineers hug around early with Royals in the opening set, but surrendered four straight points to fall behind 13-9. Redeemer grew their lead to five at 17-12, forcing a Mohawk timeout. The timeout worked as the Mountaineers cut into the lead to make it 18-17 Royals, but Redeemer once again strung together points to win the first set 25-21.

In the second set, Mohawk fell behind quickly at 5-1. There was some fight back from the Mountaineers, but the Royals continued control of the match to hold a 17-10 lead. Redeemer's lead grew to 10 for a 25-15 set two victory.

Set three was much more balanced between the two teams, even at one point looking like Mohawk would extend the match. Late in the set the Mountaineers battled back to make it 23-23. However, the Royals answered with two consecutive to end the set at 25-23, and conclude the match 3-0.

Sofia Spoljar (Hamilton, Ont.) was solid defensively with 12 digs. Jaidyn Rattray (Hamilton, Ont.) was another standout for Mohawk, coming off the bench late for three blocks.

The Mountaineers will look to snap a three-game losing streak during their next match on January 24 when they host the Boreal Vipers at 6 p.m.
