Mountaineers go winless in Oshawa

OSHAWA, Ont. – The Mohawk Mountaineers women's softball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader to the Durham Lords on Friday, losing 9-2 and 12-1.

Mohawk struck first in Game 1 when Ashlee LaForme (New Credit, Ont.) singled home Genevieve Fry (Beamsville, Ont.) to give the visitors a 1-0 lead. Durham answered with three runs in the bottom half of the inning.

The Mountaineers cut the deficit to 3-2 in the fourth on a bases-loaded walk to Katie O'Toole (Mississauga, Ont.), but couldn't add on. The Lords responded with five runs in the bottom of the inning and added another in the sixth.

In Game 2, Durham jumped out to a 3-0 lead after two innings. Mohawk got its lone run in the third when Ashka Pieris-Stevens (Milton, Ont.), struck out but reached first on a passed ball, allowing Taylor McCrae (Milton, Ont.) to score. The Lords pulled away with six runs in the third and three more in the fourth.

Mohawk returns to action Sunday when it hosts the Sheridan Bruins at Mohawk Sports Park. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
