HAMILTON, Ont. – The Mohawk Mountaineers women's softball team kept their playoff hopes alive Sunday with a doubleheader sweep of the Sheridan Bruins, winning 5-4 and 6-4.

In Game 1, Sheridan opened the scoring in the third inning before Mohawk answered in the bottom half. Tahlia Henry's (Grand Valley, Ont.) groundout brought home Ashlee LaForme (New Credit, Ont.) to tie it, and Genevieve Fry (Beamsville, Ont.) followed with an inside-the-park home run for a 2-1 lead.

The Bruins pulled ahead 4-2 in the fifth, but Fry's two-run single tied the game again. In the sixth, Renelle Bourque (Dieppe, NB) drove in the winning run with a groundout.

LaForme went the distance for Mohawk, striking out six for the win.

Game 2 followed a similar script. Sheridan scored three runs in the third, but Mohawk rallied from a 4-1 deficit in the fifth. Henry hit a two-run double, Fry reached on an error to score Henry, and Zoey Lorentz (Kitchener, Ont.) sealed it with a two-run homer.

The Mountaineers, fighting to secure a playoff spot, will host the Lambton Lions on Oct. 8 at Mohawk Sports Park. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
