LONDON, Ont. – The Mohawk Mountaineers men's cross country team claimed first place at the Fanshawe Invitational on Saturday, while the women's team finished second.
Gavin Mathieson (Cayuga, Ont.) led the men with a runner-up finish, crossing the line 25 seconds ahead of the third-place runner. Three other Mountaineers cracked the top 10 – Blaise Uglow (Schomeberg, Ont.) was sixth, Christian Jarosz (Burlington, Ont.) ninth and Sage Sulentic (Dundas, Ont.) 10th. Santiago Mendoza (Mississauga, Ont.) placed 15th, followed by Thomas Giammichele (Carlisle, Ont.) finishing 22nd, Will Summers (Hamilton, Ont.) 36th and Bart Podhorski-Okolo (Oakville, Ont.) 37th.
Mohawk totalled 27 points, finishing 23 clear of Sheridan and 34 ahead of Humber.
On the women's side, all five Mountaineers placed inside the top 22. Abril Sena (Mendoza, Argentina) led the group in 13th, with Zoe Thibault (Grimsby, Ont.) 15th, Raina Hartnell (Waterford, Ont.) 17th, Addison Cann (Paris, Ont.) 18th and Tahlia Henry (Grand Valley, Ont.) 22nd.
The women's team scored 43 points, edging St. Clair by 12 for second place.
Mohawk will host the final OCAA Invitational before the conference championships on Oct. 11 at Marydale Park in Mount Hope, Ont.
