KITCHENER, Ont. – The No. 7 nationally ranked Mohawk Mountaineers men's basketball team dropped its second straight game Thursday, falling 90-67 to the Conestoga Condors.
Mohawk opened the season with seven consecutive wins but closes the first half at 7-2.
The Mountaineers trailed 8-2 early in the first quarter, but back-to-back three-pointers from Scott Jenkins sparked an 8-0 run that gave Mohawk a 20-19 lead after one.
The second quarter proved decisive. Conestoga scored 37 points on 68.2 per cent shooting, including five threes. A 15-2 run through the middle of the quarter pushed the Condors' lead to 21 at halftime.
Mohawk's offense settled in during the third, shooting 42.1 per cent, but the Mountaineers went 0-for-7 from beyond the arc in the quarter.
The offensive struggles returned in the fourth, with Mohawk limited to three field goals on 27.3 per cent shooting. Conestoga extended its lead to a game-high 29 with 2:23 remaining.
The Condors shot 47.4 per cent on the night, while the Mountaineers committed 24 turnovers that led to 28 Conestoga points.
Jenkins was the only Mohawk player to reach double digits, finishing with 14 points on four made threes. The rest of the Mountaineers went 1-for-13 from long range.
Mohawk opens the second half Jan. 10 when it hosts the Redeemer Royals at 3 p.m.
