HAMILTON, Ont. – The Mohawk Mountaineers women's volleyball team snapped a five-match losing skid Saturday with a come-from-behind win over the Conestoga Condors.
Conestoga opened the match strong, building a 10-3 lead in the first set. The gap eventually reached 10 points and Mohawk dropped the set 25-16.
The second set featured seven ties before the Mountaineers edged ahead 14-13 and began to pull away. Leading 17-16, Mohawk scored five straight to take control and claimed the set 25-18.
Mohawk fell behind 9-3 in the third and trailed by as many as eight. Despite a late push, the Mountaineers couldn't close the gap and lost 25-18, falling behind 2-1 in the match and facing the prospect of a sixth straight defeat.
Neither team generated separation early in the fourth set, but Conestoga held an 18-15 lead late. The Condors maintained a three-point advantage at 20-17 before a six-point Mohawk surge flipped the set in the Mountaineers' favour. Mohawk held firm the rest of the way, taking the set 25-22 to force a decisive fifth.
In the final set, the Mountaineers led 8-6 at the changeover. Conestoga levelled the score, but Mohawk regained its two-point cushion. The Condors tied it again at 11-11 before Mohawk delivered its biggest response of the match, scoring three straight at 12-12 to win the set 15-12 and complete the comeback.
Avery McConkey (Stratford, Ont.) paced the Mountaineers with 17 kills, eight digs and five aces. Kyrah Cameron (Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ont.) added 29 assists and 11 digs.
Mohawk closes the first half of the season at 2-6 and returns to regular season play Jan. 14 on the road against the Sheridan Bruins at 6 p.m.
