HAMILTON, Ont. – The No. 14 nationally ranked Mohawk Mountaineers men's basketball team is off to a 6-0 start for the second time in four seasons after defeating the Lambton Lions 78-71 on Saturday.
Mohawk opened the game on an 8-0 run before Lambton pulled within one at 15-14. The Mountaineers responded with an 11-1 run to close out the quarter and lead 26-15.
The Lions again trimmed the deficit to four with 3:50 remaining in the half, but Mohawk closed strong to take a 48-34 advantage into halftime.
The Mountaineers came out firing in the third quarter, extending their lead to as much as 21 points with 2:42 left in the frame. Lambton ended the quarter on a 7-0 run to cut the margin to 69-55.
The Lions didn't go away quietly in the fourth, holding Mohawk to just three made field goals while forcing eight turnovers. Lambton closed to within five with 13 seconds remaining, but the Mountaineers held on for the win.
Four Mohawk starters finished in double figures. Marko Dosen (Hamilton, Ont.) recorded his fourth double-double of the season with 26 points and 14 rebounds. Kazim Raza (Markham, Ont.) added 15 points, Scott Jenkins (Hamilton, Ont.) scored 13, and Iverson Chong (Oakville, Ont.) was just shy of a double-double with 12 points and nine assists.
The Mountaineers will return to action Nov. 15 when they visit the Fanshawe Falcons. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m.
