HAMILTON, Ont. – The No. 4 nationally ranked Mohawk Mountaineers women's basketball team remained perfect to start the 2025-26 season, improving to 5-0 with a dominant 78-40 victory over the Lambton Lions.
All five Mountaineer wins this season have come by margins of at least 22 points.
After holding a narrow 7-5 lead early, Mohawk closed the opening quarter on a 15-2 run to take control. The Mountaineers held the Lions to just one made field goal in the frame, while Joanna Smith (Simcoe, Ont.) scored 10 of her 22 points to power Mohawk's early surge.
Lambton found a bit more rhythm in the second quarter, shooting 5-for-8 from the field but missing seven of 11 free throws. Despite a cold stretch offensively, with Mohawk shooting just 28 per cent in the quarter, the Mountaineers carried a 39-22 advantage into halftime.
Mohawk's defence clamped down again in the third, holding the Lions to eight points and only two made field goals while outscoring them by 14. The lead ballooned to as many as 41 points midway through the fourth, and the Mountaineers cruised to the 38-point win.
Through five games, Mohawk has limited its opponents to three or fewer made field goals in a quarter in 10 of 20 quarters played.
Maddie Anderson (Whitby, Ont.) led all scorers with 23 points, hitting five three-pointers and adding 12 rebounds for a double-double. Smith added 22 points, while Malak Dahawy (Waterloo, Ont.) contributed 15 off the bench.
The Mountaineers return to action on Nov. 15 when they host the Fanshawe Falcons. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m.
