No. 15 Mountaineers punch ticket to OCAA Championship with win over Falcons

OTTAWA, Ont. – The No. 15 nationally ranked Mohawk Mountaineers women's basketball team has secured a spot in the OCAA Championship following a 69-60 victory over the Fanshawe Falcons. This marks the first time since the 2016-17 season that the Mountaineers have reached the gold medal game.

The Mountaineers came out strong in the first quarter, shooting 56.3 percent from the field despite missing all five of their three-point attempts. The Falcons led 7-6 with 6:27 remaining in the opening frame, but Mohawk quickly found their rhythm, going on an 8-0 run to close the quarter with a 20-11 lead.

Fanshawe responded in the second quarter with strong defense, forcing six Mohawk turnovers. The Mountaineers initially extended their lead to 11, but the Falcons rallied, cutting the deficit to just two points with 36 seconds left in the half. Mohawk held on to a 34-30 lead heading into the break.

The third quarter saw Fanshawe tie the game 36-36 midway through, but Mohawk regained control with a 7-0 run. The Mountaineers outscored the Falcons by seven points in the quarter, extending their lead to 11.

Mohawk's largest lead of the game came with 8:02 left in the fourth, when they led by 18 points. Despite a late surge by the Falcons, who brought the score to 58-55 with 3:33 remaining, the Mountaineers maintained their composure. They pushed their lead back to eight with 1:10 left and sealed the victory from the free throw line.

Angong Jacob (Calgary, AB), Maddie Anderson (Whitby, Ont.), and Kendra Oliver (Ajax, Ont.) each scored 14 points in the win. Anderson also contributed seven assists, six rebounds, and six steals, earning player of the game honors for Mohawk.

The Mountaineers will play in the OCAA gold medal game on March 1 at 5 p.m. in Ottawa, Ont. They will face the winner of the Algonquin Wolves versus Humber Hawks semi-final.
