Mountaineers exit OCAA Playoffs with loss to Coyotes

OTTAWA, Ont. – The Mohawk Mountaineers women's volleyball team was eliminated from the OCAA Playoffs following a 3-0 loss to the La Cite Coyotes in the qualifying round.

The Mountaineers entered the match as the sixth seed from the OCAA West Division, while La Cite hosted as the third seed from the East Division.

In the opening set, Mohawk jumped to a 4-1 lead, but La Cite quickly responded with three straight points to tie the score. The Mountaineers managed to regain an 8-5 advantage after scoring four of the next five points. However, La Cite went on a 6-0 run to take an 11-8 lead. Despite staying within three points, Mohawk couldn't keep pace as the Coyotes pulled away, winning the set 25-15.

Mohawk fell behind early in the second set, 4-0, but managed to narrow the gap to two at 5-3. However, La Cite dominated from there, scoring five of the next six points to establish a 10-4 lead. The Mountaineers briefly closed the gap to 11-9, but the Coyotes went on another six-point run to extend their lead to 17-9. La Cite took the set 25-13, giving them a 2-0 lead in the match.

In the third set, Mohawk once again fell behind 3-0 but fought back to even the score at 5-5. The two teams traded points, remaining tied at 12-12. La Cite then went on another run, taking a 17-12 lead. The Mountaineers were able to close the gap to within five, but ultimately lost the set 25-18, and the match 3-0.

Emma Becke (Burlington, Ont.) had a solid defensive game with 17 digs, which sets a new season-high for her. Sofia Spoljar (Hamilton, Ont.), Olivia Rosewell (Hamilton, Ont.) and Ashley Gibbons (Hamilton, Ont.) each had four kills in the match.
 
Mohawk's 2024-25 season concludes with a 9-9 regular season record and a first round exit in the OCAA Playoffs.
