FREDERICTON, NB – The No. 15 nationally ranked Mohawk Mountaineers women's basketball team saw their season come to a close with an 81-59 loss to the No. 5 ranked Géants de Saint-Jean in the CCAA Bronze Semi-Finals.
This hard-fought loss marked the end of a historic season for the Mountaineers. They secured their first OCAA Championship in 34 years and earned their spot at the CCAA National Championship for the first time in 33 years.
The game started strong for the Mountaineers, as they held a 13-7 lead in the opening four minutes. Saint-Jean quickly closed the gap, pulling within one late in the quarter, with Mohawk maintaining a slim 27-24 lead at the end of the first 10 minutes.
Both teams continued to battle physically in the second quarter, trading baskets early. The Géants took their first lead of the game on a three-pointer with 3:25 remaining in the half, going up 34-33. The lead shifted back and forth, and with 42 seconds left, Maddie Anderson (Whitby, Ont.) hit a three to tie the game at 38-38 at halftime.
Saint-Jean came out strong in the second half, starting with a 7-0 run before Angong Jacob (Calgary, AB) hit a three-pointer, and a Jacob layup brought the Mountaineers back to within 45-43. However, the Géants responded with four consecutive three-pointers, extending their lead to 57-43. Saint-Jean held a 61-46 advantage after three quarters.
The Mountaineers' offensive struggles persisted in the fourth quarter, and they were unable to mount a comeback to keep their season alive.
A total of 40 fouls were called in the contest, with Mohawk shooting 11-of-16 from the free-throw line, while Saint-Jean made 14-of-21. The Mountaineers committed 26 turnovers, which resulted in 27 points for the Géants off those mistakes.
Angong Jacob led the Mountaineers with 18 points, while Malak Dahawy (Waterloo, Ont.) contributed 13 points. Kendra Oliver (Ajax, Ont.) had a double-double, recording 11 points and 15 rebounds, and Maddie Anderson finished with 10 points and nine rebounds.
