Mountaineers home opener spoiled by Hawks

HAMILTON, Ont. – The Mohawk Mountaineers women's softball team dropped both games of their 2025 home-opening doubleheader to the Humber Hawks on Thursday, falling 15-4 and 13-1.
 
In game one, Mohawk opened the scoring in the fourth when Ashlee LaForme (New Credit, Ont.) drove in Tahlia Henry (Grand Valley, Ont.). Humber responded with three in both the fifth and sixth innings to take a 6-1 lead.
 
The Mountaineers cut the deficit to 6-3 in the sixth after a Kayla Makowich (Guelph, Ont.) RBi double and a Hawks error, but Humber broke the game open with nine runs in the seventh. Henry finished with two extra-base hits, a double and a triple.
 
The Hawks struck early in game two, jumping out to an 8-0 lead by the third inning. Mohawk's lone run came in the bottom half of the third when Madison Babcock (Lindsay, Ont.) singled home Genevieve Fry (Beamsville, Ont.). Humber added five more runs in the fifth to put the game out of reach.
 
The Mountaineers fell to 0-4 on the season and will return to action Sept. 14 when they host the St. Clair Saints at Mohawk Sports Park. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 1 p.m.
