Mountaineers drop doubleheader to Saints

HAMILTON, Ont. – The Mohawk Mountaineers women's softball team struggled in a Sunday doubleheader, losing to the St. Clair Saints 18-8 and 10-3.
 
In the opener, Mohawk trailed 11-2 after two innings and 14-2 trough four before the offence came alive with a five-run bottom half. Renelle Bourque (Dieppe, NB) drove in Zoye Lorentz (Kitchener, Ont.), Ashka Pieris-Stevens (Milton, Ont.) followed with a two-run single, Genevieve Fry (Beamsville, Ont.) added an RBI double and Maggie Lupton (Binbrook, Ont.) chipped in with an RBI single.
 
That would be as close as the Mountaineers would get, with St. Clair pulling away for the victory. Bourque, Fry, Lupton and Tahlia Henry (Grand Valley, Ont.) each recorded two hits.
 
Game two saw Mohawk strike first, using aggressive baserunning to take a 2-0 lead. But the Saints responded with eight runs over the next four innings to take control and secure the sweep.
 
The Mountaineers will look for their first win of the season on Sept. 21 when visit the Humber Hawks for a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
