Mountaineers drop two close games to Hawks

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 TORONTO, Ont. – The Mohawk Mountaineers women's softball team dropped both games of a doubleheader to the Humber Hawks on Sunday, falling 2-0 and 9-8.

In the opener, Mohawk was limited to four hits in support of pitcher Rachel Lee (Drayton, Ont.). Lee went six innings, allowing six hits and one earned run while striking out two. Genevieve Fry (Beamsville, Ont.) had two of the Mountaineers' hits.

Mohawk started strong in Game 2, taking a 4-0 lead by the third inning. Zoey Lorentz (Kitchener Ont.) singled in the first inning, and two errors by Humber helped Lorentz and Tahlia Henry (Grand Valley, Ont.) score. Lorentz then added another run with a sacrifice fly in the third.

Humber responded with two runs in the bottom of the third and four more in the fifth to take a 6-5 lead. Mohawk regained control in the sixth when Maggie Lupton (Binbrook, Ont.) hit a two-run home run and Ashlee LaForme (New Credit, Ont.) added another run for an 8-6 advantage.

The Hawks tied the game in the bottom half and walked it off with a run in the seventh.

Henry had three hits and scored twice for Mohawk, while Taylor McCrae (Milton, Ont.) also had three hits. Lorentz finished two-for-two.

The Mountaineers will look for their first win of the season Sept. 26 when they visit the Sheridan Bruins in Mississauga, Ont. for a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.
