Mountaineers blank Lions in 3-0 win

HAMILTON, Ont. – The Mohawk Mountaineers women's soccer team returned to the win column Saturday afternoon with a 3-0 victory over the Lambton Lions.

Mohawk opened the scoring in the first minute when Lambton was called for a handball in the box. Grace McLellan (Burlington, Ont.) stepped up to the spot and converted the penalty to give the Mountaineers a 1-0 lead.

The Mountaineers controlled the first half, outshooting Lambton 12-1, but were held to just the single goal.

In the second half, Emily Schwarz (Stoney Creek, Ont.) played a lead pass to Hannah Kelly (Niagara Falls, Ont.), who doubled the Mohawk advantage. Later, Schwarz earned her second assist of the day with a corner kick that found the head of Alyssa Glasbergen (Burlington, Ont.), extending the lead to 3-0.

Annabelle Ferreira (Hamilton, Ont.) made her OCAA debut in goal for Mohawk and stopped the lone shot she faced.

With the win, Mohawk joins three other OCAA West Division teams with three victories on the season.

The Mountaineers will be back in action Sept. 24 when they travel to Vaughan, Ont., to face the Humber Hawks at 4:30 p.m.
