Mountaineers narrowly edged by top-ranked Hawks

VAUGHAN, Ont. – The Mohawk Mountaineers men's soccer team turned in one of their strongest defensive performances of the season, but dropped a 1-0 decision to the No. 1 nationally ranked Humber Hawks on Wednesday night.

Humber controlled possession throughout, outshooting Mohawk 24-2 and holding the Mountaineers without a shot in the second half.

The game remained scoreless through 90 minutes, with the Hawks repeatedly denied by the posts and by Mohawk goalkeeper Marco Ferrusi (Hamilton, Ont.), who finished with eight saves.

In stoppage time, the Mountaineers were called for a penalty in their own box. Humber converted from the spot to secure the victory.

Mohawk returns to action Sept. 27 when they host the No. 10 nationally ranked Conestoga Condors at St. Mary Catholic Secondary School. Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m.
