McLellan’s second half goal lifts Mountaineers to season opening win

OAKVILLE, Ont. – The Mohawk Mountaineers women's soccer team opened the 2025 season with a 1-0 win over the Sheridan Bruins on Saturday.
 
It marked the fourth straight match dating back to 2022 in which the Mountaineers have earned a point against Sheridan. Mohawk holds a 3-0-1 record over that span.
 
Neither side found much offense in the opening half, with Sheridan holding a 3-1 edge in shots and neither team earning a corner kick.
 
In the 55th minute, Mohawk converted on its only corner of the game. After a scramble in the box, Grace McLellan (Burlington, Ont.), pounced on a loose ball to score her first of the season and third career goal.
 
Goalkeeper Mia Hadley (Milton, Ont.), made six saves to record her fourth career clean sheet and secure the win.
 
The Mountaineers have now won four consecutive season openers.
 
Mohawk will play its home opener Sept. 12 at 6 p.m. against the Redeemer Royals at St. Mary Catholic Secondary School.
