Laroche, Ferrusi named Mountaineers Athletes of the Week

HAMILTON, Ont. - Valerie Laroche (Brantford, Ont.) of the women's soccer team and Marco Ferrusi (Hamilton, Ont.) of men's soccer have been named the Mohawk Mountaineers Athletes of the Week for the period of September 1-7.

Valerie Laroche:
Year: 2
Position: Centre Back
Program: Architectural Technology

Laroche was a factor on both sides of the pitch for the Mountaineers in a 1-0 victory over the Sheridan Bruins. The impact by the second-year centre back doesn't show in the box score, but Laroche's ability to slow down the attack of Sheridan allowed Mohawk to hold onto a clean sheet. Laroche also used her skill to create opportunity offensively for the Mountaineers.

Marco Ferrusi
Year: 2
Position: Goalkeeper
Program: Police Foundations

It was a standout performance in net for Ferrusi in Mohawk's season opener on Saturday. Despite the 1-0 loss to the Bruins, Ferrusi made a career-high eight saves. The second-year goalkeeper kept the game scoreless for much of the match, highlighted by a save early in the contest on a penalty, followed up by two stops on rebound attempts.

Athlete of the Week honours are presented by Booster Juice. Located in the David Braley Athletic and Recreation Centre, Booster Juice is open Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
