Guedes, Hunter debut in Mountaineers win

OAKVILLE, Ont. – Two recruits made their season debuts as the Mohawk Mountaineers men's volleyball team swept the Sheridan Bruins 3-0 on Wednesday night.

Brazilian outside hitter Marthus Guedes (Sao Paulo, Brazil) and transfer student-athlete Helix Hunter (Kitchener, Ont.) both saw significant court time in the victory and are expected to play key roles for the Mountaineers in the second half of the season.

Mohawk opened the match with a strong start, jumping out to a 9-4 lead in the first set and extending the advantage to 11-6, prompting a Sheridan timeout. The Mountaineers remained in control at 19-12 before the Bruins rallied to close the gap to 19-17. Head coach Brad McClure then inserted Guedes into the match for the first time, and Mohawk responded by closing out the set 25-21.

The second set was closely contested early before Mohawk pulled ahead 13-9. The Mountaineers continued to build momentum, stretching the lead to as many as 10 points and securing the set 25-16.

Sheridan stayed within striking distance early in the third set, but after Mohawk gained a brief 13-11 lead, the Mountaineers rattled off six consecutive points to take control at 19-11. Mohawk closed out the set 25-17 to complete the sweep.

Hunter led the Mountaineers with seven kills, while Guedes added four kills and three service aces in his debut. Setter Brecken Morrison recorded 14 assists, matching his season high previously set in the season opener on Oct. 18.

The Mountaineers currently sit fourth in the OCAA West Division and will visit the third-place Conestoga Condors on Jan. 16 in Kitchener, Ont., with first serve scheduled for 8 p.m.
