SARNIA, Ont. – The No. 1 nationally ranked Mohawk Mountaineers women's basketball team remained undefeated Friday night, rallying for a 62-55 victory over the Lambton Lions.
Mohawk improved to 10-0 on the season, earning its first win by fewer than 10 points.
The Mountaineers erased a 16-point second-half deficit, led by Kendra Oliver (Ajax, Ont.), who scored 14 of her team-high 16 points after halftime.
Mohawk struggled offensively early, trailing 20-10 after the first quarter. The Mountaineers shot three-for-15 from the field in the opening frame and missed eight free throws.
The difficulties continued in the second quarter, as Mohawk was limited to five made field goals and committed nine turnovers.
Lambton pushed its lead to a game-high 16 points at 48-32 with 3:40 remaining in the third quarter. The Mountaineers responded with a 10-0 run over the final two minutes, capped by a Maddie Anderson (Whitby, Ont.) three-pointer, to cut the deficit to 50-44.
Mohawk carried the momentum into the fourth quarter, scoring the first six points to tie the game 50-50. The Mountaineers took their first lead of the contest with 4:50 remaining, then pulled away with another 10-0 run to take a 60-53 advantage with just over two minutes left, holding on for the seven-point win.
Oliver added 14 rebounds to record a double-double. Anderson finished with 13 points, while Joanna Smith (Simcoe, Ont.) chipped in 11.
The Mountaineers return to action Saturday against the St. Clair Saints in Windsor, Ont. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m.
