Mountaineers extend win streak to three

KITCHENER, Ont. – The Mohawk Mountaineers women's volleyball team extended its win streak to three matches Friday night with a 3-2 victory over the Conestoga Condors.

Two of Mohawk's three consecutive wins have come against Conestoga.

The victory also marked the first OCAA win for interim head coach Nicholas Petrella.

Mohawk pulled away late in the opening set after holding a narrow three-point lead early. A run gave the Mountaineers a 19-12 advantage, which proved enough separation in a 25-18 set win.

Set two saw the teams trade leads before being tied 15-15. Mohawk responded with four straight points, then regained momentum after Conestoga closed to 19-16. Another four-point run pushed the Mountaineers ahead 23-16, and Mohawk closed out the set 25-20.

The Mountaineers remained competitive in sets three and four but dropped both by identical 25-23 scores, forcing a deciding fifth set.

The fifth set stayed tight throughout, with Mohawk leading 8-6 at the side switch. The Mountaineers extended the lead to 10-7, but Conestoga responded to tie the set at 11-11. Mohawk capitalized on Condors errors down the stretch, scoring four consecutive points to secure the set and the match.

Avery McConkey (Stratford, Ont.) recorded career highs with 21 kills and 15 digs. Olivia Rosewell (Hamilton, Ont.) posted a season-high 15 kills for the second consecutive match and matched her season high with 16 digs. Sofia Spoljar (Hamilton, Ont.) led the Mountaineers with 18 digs, while Kyrah Cameron (Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ont.) directed the offence with 41 assists.

The Mountaineers will take a week off before returning to action next weekend for back-to-back matches against the Sault Cougars. Mohawk will host Sault on Jan. 24 at 5 p.m. and Jan. 25 at 1 p.m.
