Mountaineers end 10-year drought at Humber

ETOBICOKE, Ont. – The Mohawk Mountaineers men's volleyball team earned its first win at Humber since 2016, defeating the Hawks 3-1 on Thursday night.

The victory snapped an eight-match losing streak at the Etobicoke school. Mohawk also swept the season series against Humber for the first time since the 2016-17 season.

The Mountaineers dropped the opening set 25-20. The turning point came with the score tied 6-6, when Mohawk surrendered six straight points and was unable to recover.

Set two featured back-and-forth momentum, with the teams tied at 20-20 late. Mohawk responded with three consecutive points to take set point at 24-21. Humber narrowed the gap to one, but the Mountaineers evened the match with a 25-23 win.

The third set was tied early at 9-9 before Mohawk found its rhythm and built a 13-9 advantage. The Mountaineers extended the lead to seven at 18-11. Although Humber closed to within two late in the set, Mohawk maintained control to win 25-21.

Mohawk carried that momentum into the fourth set, jumping out to a 13-8 lead. The Hawks rallied again to tie the score at 20-20, but the Mountaineers remained composed, scoring three straight points. Mohawk reached match point at 24-20, and after Humber made it 24-21, the Mountaineers secured the win on a Hawks attack error.

Dean Zicari (Burlington, Ont.) led Mohawk with eight kills. Marthus Guedes (Sao Paulo, Brazil) added six kills, three service aces and three blocks. Thomas Kuzma (Grimsby, Ont.) recorded four blocks, while Brecken Morrison (Stouffville, Ont.) distributed the offence with 27 assists.

With the win, Mohawk improved to 8-5 and now trails the Hawks and Fanshawe Falcons by one match for second place in the OCAA West Division.

The Mountaineers could potentially secure home court for the first round of the OCAA playoffs with a win on Feb. 1 when they host the St. Clair Saints at 3 p.m.
