ETOBICOKE, Ont. – The Mohawk Mountaineers women's volleyball team dropped its second consecutive match, falling 3-0 to the No. 13 nationally ranked Humber Hawks on Thursday night.
In the opening set, the teams were tied 3-3 before Humber scored nine of the next 10 points to take a 12-4 lead. Mohawk trimmed the deficit to six, but the Hawks continued to pull away and claimed the set 25-12.
Humber jumped out to another early lead in the second set, going up 7-3. This time, the Mountaineers responded, rallying to tie the score at 14-14. Mohawk later took its first lead of the match at 22-21, but Humber answered with three straight points to reach set point at 24-22. The Mountaineers cut the lead to one, but the Hawks ended the set on the next play to take a 2-0 match advantage.
Mohawk again fell behind early in the third set and was unable to mount another comeback. Humber closed out the match with a 25-18 win in the final set.
Avery McConkey (Stratford, Ont.) led the Mountaineers with 15 kills.
Mohawk returns home to host the St. Clair Saints on Feb. 1 at 1 p.m.
