No. 10 Mountaineers end season with loss; earn third seed in West Division

LONDON, Ont. – The No. 10 nationally ranked Mohawk Mountaineers men's basketball team closed the 2025-26 regular season at 13-5 after a 66-59 loss to the Fanshawe Falcons on Wednesday.

Despite the setback, Mohawk secured the No. 3 seed in the OCAA West Division and will host the sixth-place team from the East Division in the opening round of the playoffs. The opponent is still to be determined. The game will be played Feb. 21 at 3:30 p.m. at the David Braley Athletic and Recreation Centre.

The Mountaineers struggled offensively out of the gate, shooting 4-for-18 from the field in the opening quarter. Fanshawe opened the game on an 8-0 run and closed the frame with a 7-0 surge to take a 26-14 lead.

Mohawk responded in the second quarter, forcing 12 turnovers and limiting the Falcons to nine points. The Mountaineers outscored Fanshawe by 12 in the period to tie the game 35-35 at halftime.

Both teams had difficulty finding a rhythm in the third quarter. Mohawk shot 30.8 per cent from the field, while Fanshawe finished at 33.3 per cent. The Falcons carried a two-point lead into the final frame.

Mohawk finally got in front 53-52 with 8:42 remaining, but Fanshawe answered immediately with a three-pointer. The Mountaineers tied the score again at 57-57 with 4:28 left, and after trading baskets, the game was knotted 59-59 with 2:05 to play. Fanshawe then closed on a 7-0 run, while Mohawk went scoreless in the final minutes.

Eltom Adam (Hamilton, Ont.) was the lone Mountaineer in double figures, scoring 13 points off the bench.

As a team, Mohawk shot 30.6 per cent from the field, went 2-for-24 from three-point range and was outrebounded by 11. The Mountaineers forced 33 turnovers, which led to 30 points, and received 27 points from the bench.

Mohawk will learn its first-round playoff opponent on Feb. 15 when the OCAA regular season concludes.
