LONDON, Ont. – The No. 2 nationally ranked Mohawk Mountaineers women's basketball team clinched the OCAA West Division title with a 69-49 victory over the Fanshawe Falcons on Wednesday.
It marks Mohawk's first division championship since the 1990-91 season, when the OCAA featured a single division. The Mountaineers finished the regular season 15-1, their best record since going 17-3 in 2017-18.
Mohawk struggled to find its shooting touch early, missing its first nine field-goal attempts and going 1-for-16 through the opening eight minutes. Despite forcing nine turnovers in that span, the Mountaineers trailed 7-4. Mohawk closed the quarter by hitting two of its final four shots and ended the opening frame tied 9-9.
The Mountaineers took control in the second quarter with an 11-0 run to build a 27-15 lead. After Fanshawe stopped the run with a basket, Mohawk finished the half on a 9-0 surge to take a commanding 36-17 advantage into the break.
Fanshawe cut the deficit to 11 late in the third quarter, but Mohawk responded to maintain momentum and carried a 52-37 lead into the final period.
The Mountaineers extended their advantage to as many as 22 points with 2:47 remaining and cruised to the 20-point win.
Maddie Anderson (Whitby, Ont.) led Mohawk with 21 points, seven rebounds and four steals. Kendra Oliver (Ajax, Ont.) recorded her ninth double-double of the season, finishing with 13 points and 17 rebounds.
By securing the No. 1 seed in the OCAA West Division, Mohawk earns home-court advantage throughout the playoffs.
The Mountaineers will host the St. Lawrence Surge in the opening round of the OCAA playoffs on Feb. 21 at 1 p.m.
