No. 10 Mountaineers knock off No. 4 Saints to advance to OCAA Championship

WINDSOR, Ont. – The No. 10 nationally ranked Mohawk Mountaineers men's basketball team has advanced to the OCAA Championship for the first time since 2016 after an 82-80 victory over the No. 4 St. Clair Saints on Friday.

With the win, the Mountaineers have also clinched a berth at the CCAA National Championship on Vancouver Island, B.C., marking the program's first appearance at nationals in a decade.

Mohawk earned the win on St. Clair's home court and will now face the No. 7 Humber Hawks in the OCAA Championship game on Saturday at 5 p.m. The Mountaineers last reached the final in 2016, when they also faced Humber.

Friday's semifinal was a back-and-forth contest. Mohawk opened with a 7-2 run and held a narrow lead until St. Clair moved ahead 20-19 with just over two minutes remaining in the first quarter. Marko Dosen (Hamilton, Ont.) and Kazim Raza (Markham, Ont.) responded with back-to-back three-pointers to give the Mountaineers a 27-23 lead at the end of the quarter.

The Saints tied the game midway through the second quarter as the teams continued to trade baskets. Trailing 36-33 with 2:51 remaining in the half, Mohawk closed the quarter on an 11-0 run to take a 44-36 lead into halftime.

The Mountaineers built their largest lead of the game at 10 points twice in the third quarter, but St. Clair responded with a run late in the frame to cut the deficit to two. A near buzzer-beating three-pointer by the Saints gave the home team a one-point lead heading into the fourth.

St. Clair extended its lead to three early in the fourth quarter before Dante Richards answered with a three-pointer to tie the game 66-66. Trailing by one with just over five minutes remaining, Jerry Jr. Mercury hit a three-pointer and Raza followed with a layup to give Mohawk a 77-73 lead.

The Mountaineers held a four-point advantage with 1:05 remaining, but the Saints converted three free throws to cut the lead to 81-80 with six seconds left. Jailen Jackson was fouled and made one of two free throws to extend the lead to two. On the final possession, St. Clair turned the ball over, sealing the win for Mohawk.

The game featured 10 lead changes and seven ties.

Mercury was named Mohawk's player of the game after recording a game-high 22 points and 12 rebounds. Dosen finished with 17 points and nine rebounds, while Raza added 15 points and Scott Jenkins scored 12.
