Playoff Preview: Mountaineers turn attention to OCAA playoffs; host Falcons at Newman

Mohawk women's soccer look to turn momentum in win-or-go-home match

(HAMILTON) - Mohawk Mountaineers women's soccer are coming off their best regular season since 2017 with a 6-2-2 record. They will now prepare for an OCAA qualifying round matchup versus the Fanshawe Falcons on Oct. 18 at St. John Henry Newman Catholic Secondary.

The Matchup:

For a majority of the 2023 season, the Mountaineers held the top spot in the OCAA west division but the final three games of their fixture did not go the way they hoped. In their first seven games Mohawk won six, but played to a 0-1-2 record in their final three.

The Mountaineers, as the three seed, will play the seven seeded Falcons. It was a tough start to the year for Fanshawe, losing four of their first five. In their next five, the Falcons won three in a row and then proceeded to lose their final two for an overall record of 4-6.

Previous Matchup:

Mohawk and Fanshawe met once this season and it was way back during the season opener in London, ON. The match significantly favoured the Mountaineers, who cruised to a 3-0 win.

Isabelle Udovc began the Mohawk scoring in the ninth minute and less than 10 minutes later Emily Schwarz extended the lead. Alyssa Glasbergen added the third in the 85th minute.

History:

Dating back to 2011, Fanshawe had a major advantage on Mohawk. The matchup saw Fanshawe win 13 games between 2011 and 2019 with one draw in 2017. Momentum has turned in favour of the Mountaineers since 2022, with Mohawk winning two of the last three matches – the third being a draw.
