Game Recap: Men's Volleyball |

Mountaineers take down No. 1 Falcons in five set road win

Mohawk comes from behind in fifth set to steal match

(LONDON) – Mohawk Mountaineers men's volleyball made a major statement with a 3-0 (16-25, 25-23, 25-22, 14-25, 15-13) win over the No. 1 nationally ranked Fanshawe Falcons.

It is the second time in six days a Mohawk team has come out victorious versus a top-five nationally ranked team.

The first set wasn't pretty for the Mountaineers as the Falcons jumped out to a 12-6 lead. Fanshawe's lead was as high as seven throughout the set and they would go on to win by nine.

It was back and forth volleyball in the early parts of the second set and it continued that way throughout as both teams traded leads. Mohawk would go up 18-17 and that would be the last lead change of the set. The Mountaineers took a 24-19 advantage late with the Falcons roaring back with four straight but Mohawk would hold on for the 25-23 win.

The Mountaineers would continue to challenge the Falcons, who entered the match undefeated and having lost three sets all season. Both teams continued to trade points in the third set until Mohawk grabbed an 11-7 lead. The lead for the Mountaineers wouldn't extend beyond four-points as the Falcons would bring the set back within one and then take a 20-19 lead.

Fanshawe would then go up 21-20, but Mohawk would closeout the set on a 5-1 run to put the Falcons on the brink of their first loss.

Fanshawe pulled away early in the fourth set to force a fifth set.

It began to look bleak for the Mountaineers once the Falcons took an 11-9 lead, but Mohawk would find one more gear late to score three consecutive points for a 12-11 advantage and force a Falcons timeout.

After the timeout Fanshawe scored two straight leading to a Mohawk timeout. It would then be the Mountaineers scoring twice to put themselves in a 14-13 match point situation. The Falcons would then call their final timeout trying to ice the Mountaineers.

Following a Jacob Gasiorowski (Hamilton, ON) serve Fanshawe could not run a proper play, giving Mohawk a free ball and the final point of the match.

Alex Jurak (St. Catharines, ON) for the third consecutive game had double digit kills, finishing with 14. Joel Sloots (Hamilton, ON) also had a great performance with 11 kills and four blocks.

Noah Bouchard (Oakville, ON) distributed the ball well as the setter with 30 assists and defensively had 11 digs.

Mohawk's next opponent will be the Redeemer Royals on Nov. 18 at 3 p.m.
