Mountaineers stumble late versus Knights

HAMILTON, Ont. -  A tough offensive second half proved costly for Mohawk Mountaineers men's basketball as they lost to the Niagara Knights 77-74.

The Knights jumped out to a quick 9-3 lead early on, but the Mountaineers responded with back-to-back threes and a 12-0 run to take a 15-9 advantage. Mohawk concluded the quarter up 24-21.

In the second quarter the Mountaineers offense only improved as they shot 58.8 per cent from the field and outscored the Knights by seven to hold a 45-35 lead at halftime. Marko Dosen scored 23 points in the half to lead Mohawk.

Niagara would not go away in the contest as their defence held Mohawk to 12 points in the third quarter and took over the lead 58-57.

In the fourth quarter, the Mountaineers regained the advantage but the Knights went on a 10-0 run to lead 68-61. Niagara's largest lead of the game of eight would come with 5:13 left in the game.

With under a minute left the Knights continued to lead, 74-57. The Mountaineers had one last push in them, cutting the lead down to 74-72. After two Niagara made free throws, Mohawk kept the game within two after Dosen knocked down a pair of free throws.

The Mountaineers would send the Knights back to line, where they only made one-of-two, to hold 77-74 lead. With three seconds remaining, Dante Richards (Oakville, Ont.) raced up the court for a last second three-point attempt, but came up short.

Dosen finished the game with a career-high 29 points and eight rebounds. Richards came off the bench to score 15, and added seven rebounds, six assists and three steals.

Mohawk will look to bounce back at home on January 15 at 8 p.m. when they host the No. 2 nationally ranked Humber Hawks.
