Mountaineers comeback falls short versus No. 2 Hawks

HAMILTON, Ont. – The Mohawk Mountaineers men's basketball team fought back from a 19-point deficit but ultimately fell short, losing to the No. 2 nationally ranked Humber Hawks, 88-82.  
 
Humber jumped out to an early 7-0 lead, but Mohawk answered with an 8-0 run of their own, taking an 11-9 advantage. The Mountaineers last lead of the came with 3:58 left in the first quarter, but the Hawks went on a late run to end the period with a 28-22 lead.
 
Mohawk's offense struggled in the second quarter, shooting just 31.3 per cent from the field, allowing Humber to extend their lead to 52-38 at halftime.
 
Humber's largest lead of the game came with 8:23 left in the third quarter, when they were up by 19. However, the Mountaineers began to chip away at the deficit, cutting it to 10 points with 1:57 left in the quarter after a three-pointer from Charlie Hennessy (Windsor, Ont.).
 
Entering the fourth quarter down 70-60, Mohawk, fueled by the home crowd, continued to fight back. The Mountaineers started the quarter with a 6-2 run to close the gap to six points. With 4:20 remaining, Raivone Young (Halifax, NS) and Hennessy hit back-to-back threes to tie the game at 78-78.  
 
The Hawks responded with a three-pointer, regaining a four-point lead at 84-40 with 46 seconds left. Mohawk cut the lead to two after a basket by Marko Dosen (Hamilton, Ont.), but Humber sealed the game at the free throw line.
 
Both teams struggled from the free throw line, with the Mountaineers shooting 22-of-35 and the hawks making 14-of-29. Mohawk also struggled from beyond the arc, shooting just 24 per cent from three-point range.  
 
Young finished with a game-high 23 points and nine rebounds. Jailen Jackson (Hamilton, Ont.) provided the Mountaineers with 13 and Hennessy was four-of-seven from three for 12 points.
 
Mohawk will look to end their two-game losing sked on January 22 when they play the Redeemer Royals in Ancaster, Ont. with a game time of 8 p.m.
