Mountaineers hang on to down Royals

ANCASTER, Ont. – The Mohawk Mountaineers men's basketball team jumped out to a 22-point lead in the first half, helping them secure a 93-86 win over the Redeemer Royals.

Mohawk shot 54.5 per cent from the field in the first half, scoring 28 points in the first quarter and 30 in the second. The first half performance was highlighted by a 10 points second quarter from Kazim Raza (Markham, Ont.).

The lead, however, was not sustainable for the Mountaineers as they were held to 10 points in the third quarter and outscored by 15 as the Royals cut the lead down to seven going into the final quarter.

Mohawk was able to regain some offensive rhythm in the fourth, behind Marko Dosen's (Hamilton, Ont.) 10 points on four-of-four shooting.

Neither team blinked in the final 10 minutes as they traded baskets, allowing the Mountaineers to secure the seven-point win.

Dosen finished the game with 23 points and 12 rebounds, while Raza dropped 15 on a perfect five-of-five from the field. Raivone Young (Halifax, NS) finished a rebound shy of a double-double with 16 points and nine boards.

Mohawk will be in tough next game when they host the No. 6 nationally ranked St. Clair Saints on Jan. 31 at the DBARC. Tip-off is scheduled for 8 p.m.
