Mountaineers fall at home to No. 6 Saints

HAMILTON, Ont. – The Mohawk Mountaineers men's basketball team lost a close contest to the No. 6 nationally ranked St. Clair Saints, 69-65.

Mohawk got off to a strong start, leading St. Clair 16-6 through the first five minutes of the contest. However, the Saints would closeout the first quarter on a 12-4 run to cut the Mountaineers lead to 20-18.

Neither team was able to get going in the second quarter as both offenses struggled from the field. The quarter did see the lead change hands four times with Mohawk taking a 37-36 halftime lead following a Charlie Hennessy (Windsor, Ont.) three at the buzzer.

The Mountaineers were able to extend their one-point lead to seven through the first 2:30 of the third quarter, but the rest of the frame belonged to the Saints. St. Clair would then get hot from beyond the arc, knocking down five threes in the third, and taking an eight-point lead into the fourth.

Early in the fourth quarter St. Clair got their biggest lead of the contest at 10 points, but Mohawk would not go away. With 4:20 left the Mountaineers cut the deficit to two, 60-58. The Saints would then knock down a triple to go back up five. Later in the frame Iverson Chong (Oakville, Ont.) knocked down a triple to bring the St. Clair lead to 64-62, only for the Saints to extend their lead back to four with three made free throws.

Marko Dosen (Hamilton, Ont.) would answer for Mohawk as he knocked down a three, again cutting the St. Clair lead to two, 67-65. The Saints would ice the game at the free throw line as the Mountaineers could not rally.

Dosen had a game-high 23 points to go with nine rebounds. Hennessy knocked down three triples for 13 points and Chong came off the bench to score 12.

The Mountaineers will close out the home portion of their 2024-25 regular season tomorrow (Feburary 1) when they host the Lambton Lions for a 3 p.m. tip-off.
